Corini leaves Palermo as Ballardini is tipped for fourth return

Palermo coach Eugenio Corini has resigned after two months in charge of the Serie A strugglers.

Corini departs with a record of one win, one draw and five defeats from seven matches and leaves the Sicilian club second bottom of the top flight – 11 points from safety.

This is a decision that I ve taken with integrity and lucidness, which makes me feel great pain, but which seems the fairest and most logical option right now,  Corini told reporters outside the headquarters of the club he represented successfully as a player between 2003 and 2007.

I have said many times what I think of this club and its supporters and I repeat that this affection and respect will remain unaffected.

Brighton and Hove Albion 1 Arsenal 1: Locadia earns Seagulls a point

Arsenal s away-day troubles continued at the AMEX Stadium as Jurgen Locadia s first goal since his Premier League debut earned Brighton and Hove Albion a 1-1 draw.

The Gunners have failed to win four of their last five league matches on the road and they were guilty of throwing away two points on Wednesday as Locadia profited from Stephan Lichtsteiner s mistake to end a 17-game goalless run.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – the Premier League s top goalscorer – had put the Gunners ahead, but holding onto all three points proved a step too far for Unai Emery s stuttering side.

Arsenal have now won two of their last five league outings and could find themselves two points off the top four if Chelsea beat Watford later on Boxing Day.

Aubameyang almost opened …

From Coutinho to Kleberson – Brazil´s mixed Premier League history as Lucas Moura jets in

Few countries can boast a romantic association with football quite like Brazil, the supposed spiritual home of Jogo Bonito and producer of some of the greatest players ever.

But Brazil s record in terms of exports to have graced the Premier League is rather hit and miss.

Lucas Moura is the next Brazilian to head to English shores, joining Tottenham from Paris-Saint Germain, where he became a victim of their numerous attacking options.

The 25-year-old has all the attributes to suggest he will be a hit in England, possessing explosive pace, attractive dribbling skills and an eye for goal.

Atletico Madrid to make a move for Telles

According to a recent report from AS, Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are still interested in making a move for Alex Telles and will do so during the summer transfer window. This possible deal has been in the pipeline for quite some time now, with Atletico admiring the versatility and overall quality of the full-back. The club have scouted him on several different occasions, and at the age of 26, he seems to just be coming into his prime. He is considered to be an ideal replacement for Filipe Luis, and Porto seem open to the idea of selling for the right price.

Alex, who was born in Brazil, has been with the Portuguese side since back in 2016 when he made the jump over from Galatasaray. He’s been playing professionally since 2011, and it certainly seems as if nothing is going …

Inter 1 Genoa 0: Late D´Ambrosio header snatches victory for Spalletti´s side

Danilo D Ambrosio was the unlikely hero for Inter as they battled to a 1-0 win at home to nine-man Genoa in Serie A on Sunday, moving two points behind leaders Napoli and Juventus.

Luciano Spalletti s men won their first four matches of the new campaign, but after drawing with Bologna on Tuesday they seemed to have failed to break a stubborn Genoa side down at the San Siro until D Ambrosio s decisive late impact.

Marcelo Brozovic struck the post for Inter in the last minute of a lacklustre first half and Genoa had narrowly been the better of the two sides before the break.

The visitors had plenty of chances of their own to win it, teenage forward Pietro Pellegri wasting the best of their opportunities with a diving header from Davide Biraschi s right-wing cr…

Jurgen Klopp will not criticise youngsters after defeat to Union Saint Gilloise

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists he will not judge any of his young players on their performance in the 2-1 Europa League dead-rubber defeat to Union Saint Gilloise in Brussels.

Klopp’s team was the youngest in their history by some considerable margin to play a European game with an average age of just 21.9 years and six players aged 20 or under and that showed against the Belgian league leaders.

One of those 20-year-olds Jarell Quansah, who has already made 12 appearances this season, cancelled out Mohammed Amoura’s opener with his first senior goal but Cameron Puertas put the hosts ahead again at the end of an understandably disjointed first half.

Barcelona star Lionel Messi reaches 50 goals for sixth straight year

Lionel Messi reached 50 goals for the sixth consecutive calendar year by netting for Barcelona against Deportivo Alaves on Saturday.

The 32-year-old scored with a superb 20-yard curling strike in the 69th minute at Camp Nou as Barca moved closer to a key LaLiga victory.

Messi s effort restored Barca s two-goal advantage after Alaves had responded to earlier strikes from Antoine Griezmann and Arturo Vidal with an effort of their own from Pere Pons.

Argentina forward Messi moved on to 50 goals from 58 matches for club and country in 2019. He has also provided 18 assists as part of a fine year that saw him win a record sixth Ballon d Or.

Of Messi s 50 this year, 34 have arrived in 32 LaLiga matches, with eight scored in the Champions League and three in the …

Lampard pleased with Chelsea response against Aston Villa

Frank Lampard was pleased with Chelsea s response against Aston Villa and felt his side were unfortunate not to win the game.

Chelsea were made to settle for a 1-1 draw in Monday s clash after Anwar El Ghazi struck early in the second half to cancel out Olivier Giroud s opener.

The Blues had 64 per cent of the ball and had 16 shots to Villa s 10 but were unable to hold on for what would have been just a second win in five Premier League matches.

However, after accusing his players of being lazy in Saturday s 3-1 loss to Arsenal, Lampard was far happier with their display against in-form Villa.

It was a draw against a good team, he said at his post-match news conference. The performance was good. I thought we deserved to win the game but we didn t.
