In-stadium announcements on VAR rulings could be approved in leagues by year-end

Leagues around the world could be given the green light to trial referees making in-stadium announcements to explain decisions after VAR reviews before the end of the year, but broadcasting live discussions on decisions looks less likely, the PA news agency understands.

Referees’ chief Howard Webb talked through selected audio clips from incidents in this season’s Premier League during Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football programme, as part of a drive from Professional Game Match Officials Limited for greater transparency and to “draw back the curtain” on the work of referees and VARs.

Monday night’s review could become a much more regular feature in the English game next term, but one question Webb repeatedly faced onMonday night and in subsequent interviews is…

Lamine Yamal brace helps salvage point for Barcelona at home to lowly Granada

Teenage star Lamine Yamal rescued a point for Barcelona in a thrilling 3-3 draw against LaLiga strugglers Granada.

Yamal, who became the youngest scorer in the competition’s history against the same opposition earlier this season, curled home his second goal of the game 10 minutes from time to deny the visitors their first away win of the campaign.

The 16-year-old had opened the scoring in the first half, but Granada equalised through Ricard Sanchez just before the interval and Facundo Pellistri made it 2-1 on the hour mark before Robert Lewandowski levelled moments later.

Brazil 2 Venezuela 1: Dunga´s men keep Colombia alive

Brazil overcame Neymar s absence on Sunday to reach the Copa America quarter-finals thanks to goals from Thiago Silva and Roberto Firmino.

Silva s early thundering volley and Firmino s second-half tap-in gave Brazil a 2-1 victory over Venezuela in the final group-stage match of the Copa America in Santiago, simultaneously saving Colombia from elimination.

Colombia had earlier been held to a scoreless draw by Peru in Group C but Jose Pekerman s side advanced as one of the two best third-placed teams at the South American continental championships.

A draw at the Estadio Monumental David Arellano would have eliminated Colombia, with both Brazil and Venezuela progressing, but Dunga s Brazilians underlined their unwillingness to manufacture a result in the ninth minut…

Ireland eyes permanent Stoke switch

Stoke City midfielder Stephen Ireland is hopeful that he can remain at the club after his loan spell comes to an end.

The 27-year-old is on a season-long loan at the Britannia Stadium from Aston Villa after failing to hold down a place under Paul Lambert.

However, Ireland, who admits his time at Villa Park is essentially finished, wants to ensure that he remains in Mark Hughes plans.

If I do well at Stoke and they want me at the end of the loan spell and as I will be out of contract I think that, yes, my Villa career is effectively over, he told Sky Sports.

I would (consider staying at Stoke permanently), as my first impressions of the club have been fantastic. Everybody has been so welcoming and there seems to be a great buzz about the place.

I just can t…

Eden Hazard will make his first start of the season for Chelsea away to Newcastle United, while Mateo Kovacic has been handed a full debut by Maurizio Sarri.

The Blues head coach indicated in his pre-match news conference both players were ready to start but would not be able to complete the full 90 minutes.

Belgium international Hazard has come off the bench in each of Chelsea s first two Premier League matches of 2018-19, with Sarri s side taking maximum points.

Former Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez is without captain Jamaal Lascelles and star midfielder Jonjo Shelvey due to injury, though media reports have suggested the former has fallen out with the Spaniard.

Marotta baffled by Tevez Argentina snub

Carlos Tevez s absence from the Argentina squad is due to non-football reasons, according to Juventus general manager Beppe Marotta.

Tevez, capped 64 times at international level, has not represented his country since the Copa America back in 2011.

Alejandro Sabella succeeded Sergio Batista as coach following that tournament but he has resisted the urge to call upon Tevez, who has scored 18 goals in Serie A since joining Juventus from Manchester City at the start of the season.

The 30-year-old is expected to miss out on the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Brazil and Marotta is surprised he is still being overlooked.

Clearly Tevez is a man and therefore aspires to wear the jersey of his country, especially at a World Cup, Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

Mel leaves Betis

Real Betis have parted ways with first team coach Pepe Mel with the Seville club sat bottom of La Liga.

Mel had been with the club since 2010 and took them back to the top flight in the 2010-11 season before securing UEFA Europa League qualification last season.

However, while Betis sit second in Group I of the competition, their domestic form has been poor this campaign.

Mel leaves the club bottom of the pile, two points off 19th-place Almeria. Betis also suffered a painful 4-0 derby defeat against Sevilla in November.
